Slobodan Čače nous a quitté le 11 mars 2020 à Zagreb. Au-delà de son œuvre d’enseignant, d’historien et d’archéologue dont on lira l’imposante bibliographie ci-dessous, Slobodan est particulièrement cher à la communauté adriatique car c’est au cours de la table ronde qu’il avait organisée à Zadar en octobre 2001 avec Anamarija Kurilić, en collaboration avec Bordeaux, que fut lancé le projet d’atlas informatisé de l’Adriatique antique. Dès lors, il fut l’un des plus actifs soutiens à l’élaboration et au lancement d’AdriAtlas. Nous garderons le souvenir d’un homme de terrain généreux, allègre et plein d’humour. |

Slobodan Čače was born in Šibenik on April 19th 1946. After his primary and secondary education in his home-town he went on to study double major History and Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar, which was the beginning of his illustrious academic career. He graduated in 1968. During 1969 and 1970, he worked from time to time at the Archaeological Museum in Zadar until 1970 when he became a curator of this museum’s branch collection in Nin, where he remained until 1974. Since March 1st 1974, until his retirement on September 30th 2014, he worked at the Department of History at the University of Zadar (previously Department of History at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar) and was an active participant in all of its activities. As a young scientist and university professor, during the academic year of 1974/1975 he was given an opportunity to undergo a professional specialisation at the renowned French university Faculté des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines, Université de Provence, Aix-en-Provence. On February 14th 1987, he defended his PhD thesis “Liburnija od 4. do 1. stoljeća pr. n. e.” (Liburnia from the 4th to the 1st century BC) at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar. That same year he was granted the position of assistant professor at the Department of History at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar and since then he regularly advanced both in scientific and academic capacity: in 1997, he became an associate professor, in 2002 he was elected a full professor and in 2007 he became a full professor with tenure.
As a university professor he generously shared his knowledge with many generations of young people, even abroad. Many of them are now university professors as well, while others achieved a successful career as experts in museums or as school teachers, or they found jobs in various institutions and businesses throughout Croatia and abroad. He has taught numerous courses on ancient history, he introduced general theory of historical science and methodology of scientific research to students from different Departments. With the course “Ancient history of Croatia” (later renamed “Croatian lands Antiquity”) he was the first to introduce the research of Croatian ancient history into the university courses.
Early on he focused his scientific interests on the ancient history of Eastern Adriatic, especially of Liburnian territory, to which the large part of his works is dedicated. Although the Liburni and Liburnia are his constant research topic, his scientific interests are much wider, spanning from historical toponymy (with his participation to the systematic research of historical toponymy of Adriatic islands in Onomastica Adriatica) and analysis of ancient written sources (with a focus on Plinius the Elder so intense that we could collect his works in a kind of opus Plinianum), up to religious ideas and concepts. His scientific work is marked by its analytic and thorough methodology, sense of in-depth analysis, interdisciplinary approach, substantiated and clear presenting of conclusions and forming of synthesis, but at the same time by the complexity of content and method. And his works are particularly important for our knowledge of social history of autochtonous peoples of the Eastern Adriatic and its hinterland.
Among the numerous archaeological excavations, some of which he also led, the excavations of the Hellenistic sanctuary at Rt Ploča near Rogoznica in the vicinity of Šibenik should especially be pointed out, where numerous fragments of pottery gifts dedicated to hero Diomedes confirmed that the site was Pliny’s Promonturium Diomedis.
His well-recognized scientifist and human qualities led him to be at the head of several scientific research projects on the national scale but he was also very implicated in several international projects: we will remind his role in the birth of the project AdriAtlas as co-organizer of the international scientific conference Round table “Digitalised atlas of the ancient Adriatic – Geography and economic history (2nd cent. BC - 7th cent. AD)”, held in Zadar, September 18th - 22nd 2001, subsequently as one of the editor of the conference proceedings Les Routes de l’Adriatique antique / Putovi antičkog Jadrana, with A. Kurilić & F. Tassaux (Bordeaux ‒ Zadar, 2006) and as contributor to the international project “AdriAtlas” - Atlas informatisé de l’Adriatique antique (1100 a.C. - 751 p.C.) (from 2000 onward) (http://adriaticummare.org/fr/bdd and http://adriaticummare.org/Map_Adriatlas/ ).
Apart from his scholarly and scientific activities, he was an active member of the University’s administration as well as a public figure. For example, he published the results of his work in printed and other forms of mass media so that they could be available to keen larger public. From 2001 to 2005 he was also a member of Zadar City Council. He was at the Head of the Department of History as Vice-Dean of Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar in three mandates: from 1989 to 1990, and again, during the war, from 1990 to 1992, and during the period from 2000 to 2002 as the Vice-Dean for Science he participated in preparations for the founding of the University of Zadar. His mandate was extended until the end of duration of the Faculty, i.e. until the registration of the University.
